What Is Installed Air Conditioning?
Installed air conditioning, sometimes called a split system or wall-mounted air conditioning, consists of an indoor unit fixed to a wall and an outdoor compressor unit. The two are connected by refrigerant pipework and electrical cabling, installed by a qualified F-Gas engineer.
Unlike portable units, installed systems do not require a hose or floor space. They are quieter, more powerful and significantly more energy-efficient for long-term use. Most modern split systems also provide heating as well as cooling, making them suitable for year-round climate control.
Who Is Installed Air Conditioning For?
Installed air conditioning is suitable for homeowners, landlords, businesses and commercial property managers who need reliable, efficient and permanent temperature control. It is the right choice when:
You need consistent cooling or heating in a fixed space throughout the year.
You want a discreet, wall-mounted solution that does not take up floor space.
You are cooling a room or building where a portable unit is not practical.
You want the most energy-efficient solution for long-term running costs.
You need to maintain a specific temperature for regulatory, comfort or equipment reasons.
Domestic vs Commercial Installation
Residential installation typically involves one or more wall-mounted split systems in bedrooms, living rooms, home offices or conservatories. Systems are sized to the room and selected for quiet operation and aesthetic fit with the home.
Commercial installation covers a wider range of environments including offices, retail premises, restaurants, hotels, schools, dental surgeries and server rooms. Commercial systems are designed for heavier use, longer running hours and often larger or more complex spaces. We work with facilities managers, contractors and business owners to specify the right system for each environment.
Installed Air Conditioning vs Portable Air Conditioning
Both options cool a space effectively, but they serve different needs.
Installed air conditioning is more powerful, quieter, more energy-efficient and better suited to permanent, long-term use. It requires professional installation by an F-Gas certified engineer and cannot be moved between locations.
Portable air conditioning requires no installation, can be deployed immediately and moved between spaces as needed. It is better suited to temporary cooling, emergency situations, spaces without an external wall or environments where permanent installation is not practical or permitted.
If you are unsure which solution is right for your situation, our team can advise based on your property, budget and usage requirements.
Typical Installation Process
1. Initial enquiry – Contact Climachill to discuss your requirements, property type and location.
2. Site survey – One of our engineers visits to assess the space, identify the best unit positions, plan the pipework route and confirm the electrical requirements.
3. System recommendation – We recommend the most suitable system based on your room size, usage, budget and energy efficiency priorities.
4. Installation – Our F-Gas certified engineers install the indoor and outdoor units, run the refrigerant pipework and commission the system. Most residential installations are completed in a single day.
5. Handover and demonstration – We explain how to operate the system, set temperatures and use any smart controls or scheduling features.
6. Ongoing support – Climachill provides servicing, maintenance and breakdown support after installation. We recommend annual servicing to maintain efficiency and manufacturer warranty compliance.

Air Conditioning Installation FAQs
How long does air conditioning installation take?
Most residential installations are completed in a single day. Commercial installations vary depending on the size and complexity of the project. We will give you a realistic timeframe during the survey visit.
Do I need planning permission to install air conditioning?
In most cases, residential air conditioning installation does not require planning permission, as outdoor units are typically covered by permitted development rights. However, restrictions may apply in listed buildings or conservation areas. Our team can advise based on your property.
How much does air conditioning installation cost?
Installation costs vary depending on the system type, number of units, property access and any additional electrical work required. Contact Climachill for a no-obligation site survey and quote.
Do you install air conditioning throughout Sussex and Surrey?
Yes. Climachill installs air conditioning across Sussex, Surrey and the wider South East of England. Visit our areas covered page for more detail.
How often should installed air conditioning be serviced?
We recommend annual servicing to maintain efficiency, extend the life of the system and comply with manufacturer warranty requirements. Climachill provides planned maintenance contracts for both domestic and commercial clients.
Is installed air conditioning energy-efficient?
Modern split systems are significantly more energy-efficient than older systems and more efficient than portable units for long-term use. Many systems now carry A+++ energy ratings. Our team can advise on the most efficient options for your budget.
Do you service air conditioning systems you did not install?
Yes. Climachill services, repairs and maintains air conditioning systems regardless of who originally installed them. Contact our team to arrange a visit.
